Any suggestions for a printing problem I’m having in my darkroom?
I’m relatively new to printing B & W photos in a home-based darkroom. I’m having problems with clarity. The print appears to have a film over it. It’s just not crisp. Is it an issue with my chemical mixture? And if so, which one? I’d appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.
You may have some light leaking in at very low levels and that could be attributed to the “safe light” you are using. Are you using an “OC” filter? It is the only safe-light you can use … safely. The problem could be from what is called “base fog” that can happen if there is any light leakage where you load your film into the film processing tank.
Secondly … are you using multi-contrast paper? If so, are you using the two filter printing method? That is using two exposure / two filter method to get the best contrast and exposure of your print?
You may want to take the time to take a class in photography to nail down your printing skills. My first attempt in my own darkroom became so frustrating, I packed it up. Then when I finally went to Brooks and learned not only how to develop and print, but all the little things that can cause damage to negatives and prints … like surge and aerial fog, etc. Printing became fun for the first time.
I still take a class in photography about once a year to keep up with the new film technology and refresh my creative side.
